Jigawa-State-Governor-Umar-Namadi

The governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, has slashed the price of fertiliser by 50 per cent to improve agricultural productivity in the state.

The chairman of the State Committee on Fertiliser and Chief of Staff, Mustapha Makama, disclosed the governor’s decision after the committee’s meeting held at the ALGON Secretariat in Dutse.

He said the aim is to enhance farming activities and boost food production and food security in the state and the country at large.

The governor, however, warned fertiliser vendors and agents against moving the commodities outside the state, saying that anybody found doing so would face punishment.

According to him, “we will ensure no such fertiliser goes outside the state, therefore checkpoints will be mounted on roads entering the state to prevent the fertiliser from being taken outside the state.”

The Managing Director of Jigawa Agricultural Supply Company, JASCO, Rabi’u Khalid, said the state government has set aside over N2 billion for the purchase of fertiliser.

He said the state government has already commenced distribution of the fertiliser across the 47 functional JASCO stores across the state.

He advised farmers to visit any of the stores for the purchase of fertiliser.

This comes at a time when farmers are lamenting the high cost of fertiliser, which may adversely affect food production in the country.
